First Devlog In Creating The Worlds Greatest Hivemind

HELLO ONE AND ALL!

I know this post will most likely fall onto deaf ears, but I wanted to create a space where I can post my progress, view other people's progress, showcase what I have made, and release my ego before my head completely blows off its cork. In general I want to just discuss random things about my (me and my friends ofc) game and maybe even attempt to create a bit of a community before it even releases.

The main reason I wanted to make this game is cuz friends and time spent with friends (especially psychologically torturing them) is just the most fun to me. Proximity voice chat games especially horror games always made my jimmies jingle and I wanted to create one of my own, but oooh~~ big twist, the characters are brain jar people and its got roguelite elements (I know you can hold ur applause I know I'm ridiculously original). One day me and my friend were eating some Baskin Robins and our brains basically made out and we created the idea for this game.

Our game -Scout's Honor- is currently in Alpha Stage as the game mechanics and base systems are all in place and to be honest, y'all could play the game right now, but if you do you would see its missing MAD amounts of content and models (real fun when spheres and cubes chase you around hallways). I have some screenshots of the game (with placeholder UI elements and ofc some placeholder models) and honestly, it looks pretty fire for a first game. Oh yeah did I mention, this is our first game.

Above is the only world we have sorta created so far. Its rough but atmospherically its liquid gold. Ideally parts of the game would be horror and some parts would be more adventure or skill based, so what we decided to do and what our general plan is is to create 4 starting worlds (this might change based on our own growth or popularity) (also sorry for that sentence, I had a stroke rereading it but I'm too lazy to rewrite it lol).

The worlds we want:

  • Mental Hospital (the one above)
  • Medieval Castle
  • Jungle (more parkour trap based fun)
  • Abandoned Hivemind Base (Most likely will be community engagement based since thats my dream for this game and my games in the future.)

The plan is to slowly work towards creating all of these worlds and release them all at once on steam and other big platforms for people to enjoy the multiplayer game together!
(and maybe make it moddable, but im still pretty new and any tips can help :c)

Speaking of Hivemind, the concept is you are a "person" (brain in a jar person) that is part of a hivemind, but the hivemind is kinda terrible both in their ideals and the way the hivemind works. Each brain person can communicate and give information to the hivelord, but the person can never receive directly from the hivelord. We are scouts that are tasked with visiting abandoned worlds and locations and collecting evidence of intellectual life. If you fail, that sucks lmao, you are replaceable. We kinda wanted to go with an aesthetic of boy scouts or like forest rangers/indiana jones, and we wanted to go with a theme of how replaceable each brain person is. And can you believe it, the idea was incepted and birthed at a Panera bread (where genius is created). After a long long time (since im pretty new to drawing) I finally drafted up a simple character design and locked in on one of them.

Now some features that are going to be in the game to differentiate our game from others are: unique character with funny model and eye movement, a pet system or collectable system, TONS of easter eggs, and a perk system.

We wanted to have a pet and easter egg system mostly just because its fun and cute and it has HUGE potential for community participation. The eye movement is goofy. However, the crem de la crop, the perk system. We sorta wanted it to be like how boy scouts or soldiers gain badges as they do activities or achieve certain feats. So these badges the players can earn will modify their gameplay as they gather more and more until they fail the quota and restart with no badges.

I know I wrote quite a bit and this is my first one so its gunna be super awkward and weird and with run-on sentences and with a ton of issues errors and mistakes, but I'm happy I finally have a place where I can talk about things with people and potentially create a community. Oh yeah one thing is since I am a solo coder and this is my first  game, I have been utilizing chat gpt and other generative AI to help me learn about different packages and plug ins for unity and games. I know its a controversial topic, but rest assured, its use is merely for learning to use libraries where the documentation is sparse or non existent.

Thank you so much everyone, and maybe one day me and my friends can achieve our goal of making a ton of games with a connected universe so that we can tell the story that we one day wish to fully tell to you our potential audience. And as a special treat for this being the first devlog I will make, Im gunna drop a bit of a teaser for one of the concept arts for our other game (im quite proud of this one c:)

Once again thank you all, and I hope I'll start to see a LOT more of you all in the future. Your support means everything and I hope one day we can create a great community and I can learn from yall and maybe just maybe, yall can learn something from me.

Signing off,
Sean (or the Raccoon guy)

Oh forgot to mention lmao, the game is super early in development, its going to look kinda mid especially the models and to be honest, any suggestions and ideas are welcome!
